![]() I agree with RSEP22 that avoiding any NAS in favor of a dedicated Windows Server is good advice in general however, the fact remains that a dedicated Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 machine is going to cost you much more bling than finding a decent quality NAS product, such as those from Synology, QNAP, Thecus, Drobo, etc. I appreciate the insight, knowledge and expertise from the community! This is my first post to spiceworks so if you require any other information please let me know. Our budget is around $10,000 for the entire setup (including installation cost). ![]() Lenovo) as well as opinions on whether a NAS device is the right solution for us? I am also open to recommendations for other NAS devices or other solutions. I am looking for recommendations on both of these options (Synology vs. (2) Synology DS1513+ equipped with 5x2TB Enterprise Class, APPROVED hard drives seems like a better option to me than the Lenovo's. In my research I have also been hearing mainly positive things about Synology NAS devices. I have had a Synology NAS as my home media server for over a year and have no complaints with it. (Most of what I find is telling me to stay away from them) Aside from some Amazon reviews and a couple others, I haven't been able to find much information on them. ![]() I have been researching this over the past month and have not been hearing great things about the Lenovo NAS's. ![]() (1 will always be off site, 1 "in transit", and 1 plugged into the NAS)Īn IT consultant has recommended that we go with (2) Lenovo PX6-300D's (1 on site, 1 off site) and a Cisco 300 series (10/100/1000 PT 2 COMBO GBIC SG 300-28) switch to set up Link Aggregation in the office. We will also have 3 external HDD's used for rotating daily backups of the server. The issue that I saw with the cloud was the amount of time it would take to get TB's of data downloaded from the cloud. I have read the post on spiceworks recommending against this and have started looking into Cloud backup solutions. Thus the idea of having a second identical server set up at an offsite location (owners house) and having it constantly sync'd came up. Should the server ever go down, we would like the downtime to be less than 4 hours. Lately we have been using both an FTP server('Rumpus' running on Mac Mini) and DropBox. We also need a way of sending/receiving large files to/from clients & consultants. I would like to get ShadowProtect set up on all 9 PC's and backed up to the new server (mainly to reduce the downtime of having to fully re-install and set up the workstation in the event of failure on a desktop). We would also like to have a ccess to the server from offsite on Laptops, iPads, & iPhones (Cloud Server). We would like to have a minimum of 4 TB of usable storage (8TB, Raid 10). We need a new file server at the office and have been looking into a NAS appliance setup. We do not have an email server but are looking at going to Office 365. ![]() We have a couple of folders that are set so that only the owners have access to them. We mainly use the server for file storage with mapped network drives on each of the PC's. Recently, the second hard drive in the Mac Mini failed (used as a carbon copy of the primary drive), and the primary drive (500gb) has reached maximum capacity. After I got it set up, it ran for the past 3 years with very few issues and 0 downtime. We were fed up with it and decided to purchase Mac Mini Server. (larger file sizes)Ĥ years ago we had a local IT consultant build us 2 Intel Xeon servers and they were a constant nightmare! He was in at least once or twice a week trying to fix problems that we were having. Generally we like to take higher resolution pictures for ease of reference later on. We also take A LOT of pictures of job sites. The software that we use consists of: Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Acrobat, Some Adobe Photoshop and Indesign, and the Microsoft Office Suite. We are a small design firm of 9 employees running Windows 7 PC's on a Gigabit LAN. ![]()
